Daycare Abuse

Your child is one of the most important things in the world, and when you drop them off at a daycare provider, after-school program, or camp, you expect them to be treated with care and supervised properly by well-equipped staff. Unfortunately, each year thousands of parents have their trust betrayed by negligent or abusive daycare facilities. If you suspect your child is being abused by a daycare provider, immediately report the abuse to the police and consult with us at JDL Law Firm so that we can help you and your child receive justice.

Sadly, there are multiple types of abuse a child may experience at daycare.

  • Physical abuse can range from grabbing a child roughly, to hitting them. This form of abuse may often leave temporary marks and bruises, or more long-term marks like debilitating injuries and scars. Any time a daycare worker touches your child, abuse may be present.

  • Emotional abuse may be harder to recognize, but sadly it can have a far-reaching impact on a child. Anything a daycare worker does that can harm your child developmentally, cognitively, or behaviorally can be a form of emotional abuse.

  • As horrific as the thought may be, sexual abuse is another form of abuse that children may face at daycare facilities. This form of abuse includes when workers touch a child’s genitals, coerce a child to have sex with them, or capture photos/videos of a naked child.

  • Neglect can be more passive and harder to recognize than other forms of abuse, but it can still have a major impact on a child and their development. Not changing a child’s diaper, failing to feed a child, not maintaining proper supervision, and more all are types of neglect. Unlicensed and overcrowded daycare facilities are a common place for this type of neglect to occur.

Children may not always be vocal about the abuse they face at these facilities, so it is important to be aware of and recognize the signs of daycare abuse. Some common signs include:

  • Sudden aggression towards other family members, children, or pets

  • Poor concentration or bad memory, commonly seen in older children who are victims of abuse

  • Trauma or redness in your child’s genital area

  • Flinching when touched, even by those that they trust

  • Being afraid of daycare, crying or clinging to you when they are dropped off

  • Developing an STD

  • Being more affectionate than usual, like asking for more hugs, clinging onto you, or asking to sit on your lap

  • Sudden development of nightmares, bed-wetting, or night terrors
